Why can't I be a mercenary ?? I know that to become a merc in warband, the faction must be at war and you need to have high relationship with lords. I'm trying to be a merc for Swadia, and it's at war with Nords, Vaegirs and Khergits. My relationship with the Swadia lords is : Count Grainwad 33. Count Tredian 22. Count Clais 11. The bug would be him not firing you as a merc as soon as you attack his castles, what you should have done BEFORE you started that was talked to him and asked to become a vassal. A Vassal can get cities, castles and villages, a merc can't. Chief_Defender 13 years ago #14. Hunting mystmountains are just a way to get renown, but after you army size has reached 50 it will become worthless, at this point just rely on mercenary payment start following the marshal or quest for Knighthood orders. This mercenary stage will last a long time, be sure to keep switching factions for troop variety. Go to the meadhall in one of the town in the faction you want to join. Ask the Host about jobs. If the host say there is a lord looking for mercenaries. Go and look for him. Ask him for task until it appears ( I have promised king ( BLAH ) that i would hire a mercenaries for the upcoming campaign ) Say Aye i'll join.
Once you are mercenary you are effectively part of the kingdom you work for. Any fight you are part of (even against bandits) gives you influence. You also gain influence by stocking garrisons and jailing (donate) prisoners. This can be done by at any employer fort or city. Influence gain from prisoners/garrison is actually way higher than from

This basically means that you become a general for the faction you joined, command troops, and fight your factions' enemies with your army you command. More importantly, you'll get reputation with the kingdom you're trying to join. Once you get hired as a mercenary in the kingdom you're trying to join, constantly ask the king and the marshall for missions, as well as joining (winnable) fights. The most important part of getting a fiefdom is building rep with the king and marshall.
