When you join a faction your banner swaps to their color by default. It is possible to remain in a faction and keep your custom banner color. Simply go back into your banner editor after joining a faction and edit it back to your liking. Alternatively, if you have a banner code cntrl-v it back into the editor. Well first things first, you can't become king all by your lonesome. Each faction has their own specialties. Their own "Best in Slot" unit's if you will.
