My old 550D would overheat when shooting 1080p, and the Sony cameras also overheat on 4K, so far the 5D Mark IV has been working reliably. On the stills side, the camera performs great, the sensor provides sharp images with very nice details, even though there is a low pass AA filter - good glass helps; like the 85mm f1.8 from Tamron :)

It’s another clear win for the Canon 5D Mark IV as it can shoot 4K video whereas the 70D can only muster Full HD video. At launch the 5D Mark IV was subject to a dramatic crop in 4K video mode but a firmware upgraded reduced this to 1.27x, which is much more manageable.
The 5D-IV has been out a long time now so its hard (for me) to readily recall all the performance machinations in reviews and forums. But I seem to remember that all things being equal the CF card is more reliable than the SD card when shooting video in 4k.
I've never had any problems with my Lexar 128Gb 1066x/160MB/sec CF card shooting 4K with the 5D-IV, and it's good to know that the fault in your case was the memory card. The reason for the very high bitrate could be less compression required by the camera while shooting, and as a result, less heat developement.
